argued for granting russia pntr, which has until now been prevented by what is known as the jackson-vanik amendment, focus on the supposedly bilateral trade benefits. the issue that concerns me and many members is not trade but human rights. advocates of repeal say that the jackson-vanik amendment is outdated and is purely symbolic and therefore should be disregarded. but in the ira of human rights, madam speaker, symbols can have a very great importance. over the years jackson-vanik has become a sign of the continuing u.s. commitment to human rights in russia and elsewhere. repealing the amendment could very well be interpreted as an indication that our commitment is now weakening. this would be a terrible signal to send at a time when putin is in the process of imposing ever tighter restrictions on all opposition to his regime, especially democratic activists and any others who dare to defy the authorities. i also oppose granting russia aren't -- pntr at this time because it is but one more concession by the united states in pursuit of the president's failed reset of relations wit

from hawkins field air report in jackson, mississippi, the single engine plane started spitting and sputtering almost out of gas before it went down in a blast of fire and smoke. it crashed into the home of loretta jamison who escaped by jumping out of a window. she was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. she is being treated at a local burn center. we did hear from a relative shortly after the accident. take a listen. >> by that time i hung up the phone and i was here within two minutes. when i got here. they wouldn't let me through but i was screaming my fiance name because i was distraught. >> reporter: the owner of the plane roger latham was supposed to be on board but changed plans at the last minute to go hunting with his family. jenna: looked like the plane was out of gas in the air and sputtering sort of twisting around. what is the latest on the investigation? >> reporter: investigators are headed to jackson now. we know that they're interviewing local police and firefighters. it will be some time before we get answers because obviously it is under investi

and with his help he ascended the jobs in the yet penetration of andrew jackson. first he helped him become the u.s. attorney general, then the secretary of the treasury and then in 1836 the chief justice of the supreme court. he went on to write the dred scott decision in 1857 which effectively legalized slavery and he's in the coming of the civil war so they were inseparable political figures in this period and influential and important in a way that is totally forgotten. in washington there is a bridge that crosses the potomac river in the park where he used to live and in the park there's lots of exhibits that are devoted to him and there is one that says he was active in antislavery causes and this is wrong, completely wrong. it would be more active to say that he was active in suppressing the antislavery causes. part of the point of the book is to remind people of things we really don't want to remember about our own history so this is also a book about the real francis scott key but i don't want to give the wrong impression. this book is not a polemical book or out to score points. i
